Itinerary

  • Day 01 - 25 May (Fri) - Hong Kong / Yerevan

    Upon arrival, met & transfer to Hotel Yerevan Marriott.

    Walking tour of Yerevan exploring various layers of its history – medieval shrines hidden behind imposing Soviet-style façades, narrow streets of the old centre with sunlight playing on its pink walls, Closed Market and Blue Mosque on Mashtots Avenue, Republic Square, Cascade and Mother Armenia, Opera House and ambitious projects of independent Armenia – North Avenue and spacious Grigor Lusavorich Cathedral consecrated by His Holiness the Patriarch of All Armenians in the presence of His Holiness Pope John Paul 11. A cultural showcase not to be missed is Matenadaran, one of the world's oldest repositories of Greek, Persian and Arabic manuscripts. Travel by subway.

  • Day 02 - 26 May (Sat) - Yerevan / Khor Virap / Echmiadzin / Yerevan

    This morning, a 1-hour drive takes us to Khor Virap Monastery, stunning set below the Biblical Mt. Ararat amidst beautiful rural landscape. It is also significant for being the 4th century site of the imprisonment of Gregory the Illuminator.

    Then drive about 65km or 1¼ hour to Echmiadzin, the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church and perhaps the most important religious site in the country always bustling with activities. Also visit the Zvartnots ruins from the 7th century.  Both Echmiadzin and Zvarnots are UNESCO World Heritages.

    Return (25km or about 30min drive) to Yerevan for dinner.

  • Day 03 - 27 May (Sat) - Yerevan / Gerhard / Garni / Yerevan

    Make an excursion to cover several highlights. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Geghard monastery, rock-cut from caves, producing some beautiful acoustics.  Then continue to Garni, a pagan Hellenistic temple in a picturesque setting, and have lunch at a local house. Return to Yerevan, and visit the Armenian History Museum, whose collection includes important relics from Stone Age to Medieval periods. Also visit the spectacular Cascade complex, which houses one of the world’s greatest collections of modern glass sculpture.

  • Day 04 - 28 May (Mon) - Yerevan / Dzoraget
    This morning we drive towards Lake Sevan and visit Sevanavank monastery. Continue to Lori region for the sightseeing of 10-13-th centuries monastic complexes of Sanahin and Haghpat, outstanding examples of medieval Armenian architecture and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

  • Day 05 - 29 May (Tue) - Dzoraget / Mtskheta / Ananuri / Kazbegi

    After breakfast drive to border with Georgia Sadakhlo. After border formalities continue drive to town of Kazbegi via Mtskheta. Enjoy lunch at local restaurant on the way.  

    Visit Mtskheta, ancient capital of eastern Georgia. Georgia’s conversion to Christianity occurred in Mtskheta in 337AD.  Visit its historical, fully-functioning churches including the beautiful 7th century Jvari Church perched on a cliff overlooking the city, the Sveti-Tskhoveli Cathedral, the first Christian church to be built in Georgia and its largest functioning cathedral, and the Samtavro monastery complex, with its shrine to St Nino, converter of Georgia.

    Drive along the Georgian Military Highway into the mountainous provinces of the Greater Caucasus. En route visit 16th century fortress Ananuri, overlooking Jinvali reservoir.   Continue journey via Georgia’s top ski resort - Gudauri (2,100m) and Cross Pass (2379 m) through alpine meadows and mountain passes littered with medieval watch towers to Kazbegi

  • Day 06 - 30 May (Wed) - Kazbegi / Gergety / Sno / Tbilisi

    This early morning, enjoy taking photos of rural life in Kazbegi surroundings. Then we take a 4 WD vehicles drive up towards Tsminda Sameba Church.  A 5 minute hike is required to cover the final distance to the church, but the exercise is well worth it to reach this beautiful, solitary spot surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

    After lunch take a walk in the village and visit local felt master and find out old history, techniques and process of sheep wool treatment and dyeing with natural paints as well as enjoy several species of herbal teas. Then we visit the stone carved faces around Sno village.

    At the end of the day, we drive towards Tbilisi.

  • Day 07 - 31 May (Thu) - Tbilisi

    Today, we spend the full day in the Old City of Tbilisi which present excellent photography opportunity. Apart from churches, synagogues and mosques, the old city is also well known for its 19th century houses with wooden multi-coloured balconies. You will also visit the Narikala Fortress, the Open Air Museum of Ethnography with collection nearly 70 traditional wooden houses from Georgia and have time to stroll along Rustaveli, the main avenue of the city.

  • Day 08 - 01 Jun (Fri) - Tbilisi / David Gareja / Tbilisi

    Today’s excursion is to the haunting David Gareja monastery complex Lavra and Udabno monasteries, set in the semi-desert on the border with Azerbaijan, 140 km or about 2 hours’ drive from Tbilisi.  This complex of rock-cut cave monasteries and churches was founded in the 13th century by the Syrian Fathers, a group of monks from Assyria who came to Georgia to help with the establishment of Christianity.  Many of the caves bear ancient frescoes.  We have time for about 2 hours of hiking to visit two of the monasteries. Have lunch at small local restaurant where you can enjoy dishes prepared by local cooks from the village. Located in the middle of a steppe, in a small village of Udabno, it is the closest restaurant to the monastery complex.

  • Day 09 - 02 Jun (Sat) - Tbilisi / Hong Kong

    Transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
